Obituary of Thelma Jane Harris

Thelma Jane Harris Glace Bay It is with great sadness that we the family of Thelma Jane (Oland) Harris, age 83, of Glace Bay, announce her passing on Thursday, March 7, 2024, at the Harbour View Nursing Home surrounded by loved ones. Born in Sydney, and raised in Coxheath and Baddeck, she was the daughter of the late Stewart Douglas “Dodie” and Laura Elaine (Murchinson) Oland. Thelma was well known throughout Cape Breton as a gifted seamstress and excellent cake decorator, making many gowns, graduation, and wedding cakes. She will be remembered for being a wonderful wife, mother, mother-in-law, grandmother, great grandmother, sister, and friend to so many. She was also a long-time summer resident of Margaree Valley. Mom had a special affinity for animals including Poochie, Jenna and Bailey and many grand dogs. She also took great pleasure in feeding and watching the hummingbirds. Thelma is survived by her loving husband of 60 years, James Robert Harris; children, Laurie (Todd Burns), Cathy (Frank Power), Robbie (Sherry); grandchildren, Jessica (Ben Adams), Courtney (Sean Thompson) and great grandchildren, Nolan and Harrison. She is also survived by her sisters, Marilyn (Paddy Morrison) and Judy (Angus Morrison), as well as several nephews and a niece. Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her brother Douglas ‘Dodie’, sister, Catherine (Peter) Dakin; father and mother -in-law Robert and Katherine Harris, niece and nephews. The family would like to thank a special family friend, Valerie Shepherd for all your comfort and support, as well as all staff at Harbour View DVA Unit. Cremation has taken place. A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, April 6, 2024, at 11 a.m. in T.J. Tracey Cremation and Burial Specialists, 370 Reserve St., Glace Bay. 902-849-4199.
