Obituary of Jane Marilyn Metcalfe

Please share a memory of Jane to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Jane Marilyn Metcalfe, 73, of Halifax passed away peacefully on April 23, 2024, at Hospice Halifax after a short battle with cancer. Jane was born in Oshawa, Ontario and was the only child and daughter of Harold and Marguerite Wood. She was a lively, independent, and adventurous woman who loved skiing (on snow and water), travelling, good wine and food, and never stayed in one place for too long. She moved more times than anyone could count in her 73 years, but her favourite was always the time she spent in White Rock, BC. Jane began her career as an x-ray technician at the age of 19 and worked in hospitals and private clinics all over Canada for nearly 40 years. Post-retirement from x-ray, she worked as a personal caregiver for Home Instead in Toronto, Ontario; she took pride in helping people live at home independently for as long as possible. “Aunty J” to Wendy, Robin, Caleb and Kieran, Lori and Kyle, and Tina, Declan and Callum. Beloved friend to Phyllis and Ian, Cathy and Dave, Patty, and many others. Jane will be missed for her loyalty, care, and kindness. In her final days, Jane shared some of her favourite memories of her Dad with her beloved dog, Casey, time spent travelling, recounting the shenanigans of her younger days with friends, and her time spent as a caregiver to Caleb and Kieran. Her final months were filled with visits and phone calls from friends and family, recalling cherished memories, laughing at old stories, and taking time to appreciate shared love and joy. Jane was especially grateful for the love and support she received from local friends Sarah and Megan, her friends at Leaman Towers, the caregivers from Newfoundland Ladies, and the friends and family who came to stay with her at home as she navigated the challenges of her declining health. Memorial donations are welcomed to Halifax Hospice, in Jane’s honour. A special gratitude for the love and care provided by the nurses, doctors, social workers, hospitality staff and volunteers who brought joy and comfort to Jane in her final weeks.
